[Bookplate for Iser Steiman M.D. by A. N. T.] Black ink on cream paper. Man, no shoes, chest bare, book hugged against torso with left arm, while right arm holds open a book held at eye level. Sunlight illuminates the man. Deciduous tree in foreground. Hills in background. 22. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 23. [Bookplate for Louis C. de V Carrier] Two lines of plain text with a dotted line under the last line. 24. [Bookplate for Marjorie Vivien Smith] A winged horse in flight among stars at night framed by a border with stars and planets is depicted. Bookplate still affixed to a portion of the book cover that has been cut out ; book is "The Voluntary worker in the social services. Report of a committee jointly set up by the National Council of Social Service and the National Institute for Social Work Training under the chairmanship of Geraldine M. Aves" (Beverly Hills, Calif., Sage Publications: 1969). 25. [Bookplate for Rainald Knightley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue). 26. [Bookplate for Thomas Venables Scudamore] Lion's gamb from a crest-coronet. Helm is Gentlemen and Esquires. Three stirrups. Motto of scuto amoris divini is possibly a play on the family name scut + amor = Scudamor. 27. [Bookplate for V. C. Scudamore] A light in the upper left corner casts rays of light on the sillouette of a person reading. 28. [Bookplate for V. D. H. K. Rozsnyay and J. E. Horvath by S. J.] Black ink on tan paper. This bookplate portrays a young nude boy holding a lily stem. 29. [Bookplate for W. Carleill-Hall] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a person’s head in profile facing the left. The person is wearing chain mail, but no helmet and is atop a crest-wreath. Below the crest-wreath is another crest with a gentlemen and esquire helm and elaborate black and white curling mantling extending out horizontally, as well as down the sides of the shield. The shield is divided per pale. The dexter side is argent with a sable chevron. It is charged with three black birds trussed, two over one. The chevron is charged with three white flowers with six petals and line decorations in the middle. The sinister side is sable and charged with three white demi-lions. At the base of the shield is a ribbon with a flat central base and ends that extend up like a V to the left and right. On that central base is printed, black, capitalized, sans serif text. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case, cursive text. 30. [Bookplate for William Griffin and Florence Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Brown ink on cream paper. The bookplate has a perforated border with rounded corners. At the top left and right corners are flowers with four square petals and five leaves extending below. The floral decorations are quite simple, featuring only small lines. Between the two flowers is curling text in sentence case followed by five leaves with stems curling to the left and the tip of the leaves curling to the right. In the centre of the bookplate an open book. The book has enforced corners and a clasp on the cover. On the open left page is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. On the open right page is a cat sitting on a crest wreath. A link from a chain extends from the base of the book’s spine to attach to a sign with a thick white border. Atop a speckled background is capitalized and lower case font with stylized serif accents. Two links of chain are attached to this sign from below in the left and right corners. Between the chains are stylized curling, accents meeting in a decorative feature in the centre with a leaf extending downwards. Text is printed on the left and right hand side of the leaf. There is a handwritten note in pencil in the bottom right hand corner. 31.
